MISSION: SPACE. The biz of #space all week on @CNBC.

Jane Wells kicked off CNBC’s series focusing on the business of space today from Spaceport America’s horizontal launch campus.  CNBC’s multifaceted, week-long report begins in New Mexico and then takes viewers all across America for a close-up look at different kinds of companies  – both public and private, including startups – involved in various aspects of going to and having a presence in space.  Every evening there will also be a segment aired on the PBS Nightly Business Report.

Spaceport America is just amazing and it’s great that so much is going back into a state where so much of space began”.
– Jane Wells, CNBC

Early this morning an interview with Dr. Bill Gutman, Vice President of Aerospace Operations, was aired where he explained the history and future aspirations of Spaceport America.

Wells, an award winning journalist based in Los Angeles, began her career in New Mexico as a reporter with KOB TV in Albuquerque.

As I move on after five and a half years on this tremendously important project, I am reflecting on our past accomplishments and our future at Spaceport America.  I am very proud of the fact that we built a small city in the middle of nowhere, helped to shape the future of the commercial space industry, and inspired 1,000’s of young people to consider a career in engineering, science or math.  I’m also proud that this year, we are covering 75% of our operational budget through revenue and next year, we project that we will be covering 90%.  This means we have almost reached our goal of being totally self-sustaining.

Spaceport America’s business development, aerospace and ground operations teams have worked tirelessly since our spaceport has become operational in 2013 to take our offering to the market and fill both our aerospace and non-aerospace business pipelines with new leads and opportunities.  We have conducted 28 launches to date, and our customers have planned six launches in the next few months. We are also in discussions with three major companies for long term flight testing; each requiring local support, technical services and construction.  We are also very excited about the recent opportunity to partner with the U.S. Army White Sands Missile Range to assist with testing Boeing’s Crew Space Transportation System at Spaceport America.

We’ve recently announced our Spaceport America Signature Event Series to share and showcase the world’s first purpose-built spaceport through sports, technology, racing and rockets.  The five recurring annual events include:

Spaceport America Open House – October 1, 2016
Spaceport America Drone Summit – November 11-13, 2016
Spaceport America Relay Race – April 6-9, 2017
Spaceport America Cup – June 13-18, 2017
