Spaceport America recently welcomed approximately 40 Panda digital media employees and business partners from Beijing as part of a Fam (familiarization) Tour of New Mexico in support of the strategic partnership between the New Mexico Film Office and Panda iMedia. According to the Los Angeles Times, The Motion Picture Association of America projects that China will overtake the United States to become the world’s largest film market within the next couple of years.

Christine Anderson briefed the group and shared with them her perspective on the future of the commercial space industry followed by an overview of Spaceport America, including serving as an ideal film location for space, desert set or western films. She was then interviewed by China Central Television (CCTV), the state television broadcaster. CCTV and Panda iMedia reach as much as three-fourths of the Chinese population.

The briefing was followed by a tour of the Spaceport Operation Center (SOC) where Spaceport America Firefighters and other crewmembers engaged with the visitors.  And after a spin down Spaceway 16/34, the group ended their visit with one last photo opportunity on the apron in front of the iconic terminal hangar facility.

Chinese digital media professionals will study film production techniques, such as 3-D animation with New Mexicans as part of a partnership to develop cross cultural and economic ties for the New Mexico film industry to the most populous country in the world.

Irene Ran, Panda iMedia’s North American partner and head of business development and Penny Shen, Chairman and Founder of the group were both onboard to explore the futuristic horizontal launch campus of Spaceport America.

“Spaceport America is an unforgettable place and we have had an amazing visit – thank you” – Penny Shen, Panda iMedia Founder

STX Entertainment’s interplanetary adventure “The Space Between Us” film production began in September 2015 in New Mexico on location at Spaceport America.

In this interplanetary adventure, shortly after arriving to help colonize Mars, an astronaut dies while giving birth to the first human born on the red planet – never revealing who the father is. Thus begins the extraordinary life of Gardner Elliot – an inquisitive, highly intelligent boy who reaches the age of 16 having only met 14 people in his very unconventional upbringing. While searching for clues about his father, and the home planet he’s never known, Gardner begins an online friendship with a street smart girl named Tulsa. When he finally gets a chance to go to Earth, Gardner is eager to experience all of the wonders he could only read about on Mars. But after his explorations begin, scientists discover that Gardner’s organs can’t withstand Earth’s atmosphere. Gardner joins with Tulsa on a race against time to unravel the mysteries of how he came to be, and where he belongs in the universe.

The film was directed by Peter Chelsom (“Serendipity,” “Hector and the Search for Happiness,” “Shall We Dance”) and produced by Richard B. Lewis (“Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,” “August Rush”). The story is by Stewart Schill and Richard B. Lewis & Allan Loeb with a screenplay by Allan Loeb and Peter Chelsom & Tinker Lindsay.

The production employed at least 100 New Mexico crew members and approximately 30 New Mexico principal actors and an estimated 1,000 local background talent.

“We were pleased to host the filming of this exciting movie at Spaceport America. The cast and crew were super to work with. We are looking forward to seeing the movie on the big screen in August.”
– Christine Anderson, Spaceport America CEO

“Spaceport America was a fantastic location to capture the opening sequences of our new STX motion picture THE SPACE BETWEEN US. The ambitions of our story take us from Earth to Mars and back, and the Spaceport America operations team made filming there a dream. Truth be told, it was actually a dream of mine over the last four years to capture the stunning visuals of Spaceport. We’re honored to be the first major motion picture to film on this location.”
– Richard B. Lewis, Producer

The film, scheduled to be released in August 2016, stars Gary Oldman (“The Dark Knight,” “Harry Potter”), Asa Butterfield (“Ender’s Game,” “Hugo”), Carla Gugino (“Wayward Pines,” “Night at the Museum”), Britt Robertson (“Tomorrowland,” “The Longest Ride”), BD Wong (“Jurassic World,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”) and Janet Montgomery (“Black Swan,” “Salem”).
