The Wirefly X Prize Cup is proudly showcasing New Mexico’s role in the New Space Race for the
third straight year. In 2007, New Mexico is taking the Cup to the next level, hosting events
in both Las Cruces and Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo.
Holloman made space history in 1961 when HAM, a chimpanzee trained at the base, became the
first chimp in space. This summer, Holloman may be making news again, this time as a location
for the Steven Spielberg action movie, Transformers.
At this year’s event, officials are expecting eight viable competing spaceships for the
Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge, and more than 100,000 spectators, including
10,000 schoolchildren. At the same time, the Air Force is planning a state-of-the-art
airshow, with demonstrations of F-16s, F-22s, and F-117s. The added venue will maximize
the use of launchpads and other facilities, while featuring more performances,
presentations, and displays than ever before.
“The Cup remains the only annual event where the entire family can see the next generation
of private spaceships in action, and that’s an important distinction for New Mexico,”
said Rick Homans, Director of the New Mexico Spaceport Authority.
